WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 22, 2013) – The Data Transparency Coalition will feature the nation’s first open data business exhibition at its flagship event, Data Transparency 2013, on September 10 at the Ronald Reagan Building. A broad spectrum of tech-industry entrepreneurs and innovators – ranging from brand-new startup firms to heavyweights like Google – will showcase solutions and ideas that utilize open data to create value for government, investors, taxpayers, and citizens, while building a new industry and creating jobs.

Ambitious policy initiatives like President Obama’s Open Data Policy [PDF] and the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act (DATA Act) aim to open federal data by imposing new standardization and publication requirements. Government-wide data standards, such as common identifiers and formats, can unlock new insights that are currently trapped in separate agency and office siloes.

Efforts to standardize and publish government data create business opportunities in three broad areas: republication, analysis, and compliance automation. The following exhibitors will present open data solutions and ideas within these categories:

  • Republication makes government data more accessible by structuring it and adding value through innovative platforms.

Exhibitors: Google; OTC Markets. Startup Exhibitors: CalcBench; Enigma; ExVersion; GovTribe;LegCyte; NonprofitMetrics; TagniFi; Way Better Patents; Captricity.

  • Analysis supports government accountability and regulatory oversight by processing previously unconnected data sources to illuminate and eliminate waste, fraud, and regulatory violations.

Exhibitors: Teradata; Oracle; Esri; Fujitsu; Oversight Systems. Startup Exhibitors: Optensity.

  • Compliance automation eliminates manual compliance tasks by connecting electronic data reporting requirements directly to existing management and accounting systems in the public and private sector.

Exhibitors: PwC; RR Donnelley; Adaptive; Invoke; IPHIX; Level One Technologies; Smartronix; StreamLink Software.

Five leading nonprofits are co-hosting Data Transparency 2013 as Special Policy Partners: the Center for Data Innovation; The Governance Lab at NYU; the Sunlight Foundation; TechFreedom; Object Management Group. These organizations, along with the Aspen Institute’s Nonprofit Data Project, a conference sponsor, will also join the exhibition to present open-data-driven transparency solutions.

Data Transparency 2013, the nation’s first public conference on open data policy, will gather congressional and executive branch leaders to explore the impact of publishing and standardizing federal data and to devise a policy agenda for future reforms. The exhibition will reinforce these policy sessions by underscoring the business opportunities of open data.

“Affordable technology that makes information transparent and accessible is proving its value every day in the private sector,” said Craig Clay, Executive Vice President, RR Donnelley. “We applaud the effort to bring these same open data benefits to the public sector. Open data will continue to transform financial regulation and government oversight by providing actionable intelligence to investors and regulators. More consistency in reporting will accelerate the creation and adoption of innovative tools for more efficient disclosure management and a growing data set will dramatically increase the value and sophistication of analytical tools.”

“Open data isn’t just good for government and democracy. It’s good for business,” said Hudson Hollister, executive director of the Data Transparency Coalition. “When the federal government standardizes a particular area of its data, and makes that data freely available, tech startups are launched and companies grow. Open data has already created new industries in areas like GPS. But this transformation has yet to occur in areas like federal spending, management, regulation, legislation, tax, and the judiciary. Our exhibitors are poised to use open data in these and other areas to build new businesses and create jobs – if policymakers decide to standardize and publish the data.”

About the Data Transparency Coalition

The Data Transparency Coalition is a trade association that advocates for data reform in the U.S. government. The Coalition brings together technology companies, nonprofit organizations, and individuals to support policies that require federal agencies to publish their data online, using standardized, machine-readable, nonproprietary data standards. The coalition is steered by a board of advisors. Members include sector leaders such as Teradata Corporation, WebFilings, and RR Donnelley, and smaller start-ups such as Level One Technologies, BrightScope, and StockSmart.
